Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
March 4 | 6:00pm
Laissez les bons temps rouler!! Don’t miss the party—and the farewell—on March 4th
So, it may not be New Orleans at Mardi Gras, but Grace is ready to “let the good times roll!”
Come out for our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Party on Tuesday, March 4th at 6pm. There will be pancakes galore, sausage and bacon, and who knows—maybe Pastor Brooks will make his (should be) famous beignets!
Following our festivities, we will gather in the courtyard to sing our farewell to alleluia and get ready for our Lenten fast.
If you would like to help with the prep, cooking or clean-up, contact the office at office@GraceDurham.org.
Ash Wednesday
March 5 | Noon or 7:00pm
Make plans to be at Grace for Ash Wednesday, March 5th
Ash Wednesday is one of the most solemn days of the church year. This liturgy marks the beginning of Lent, a forty-day period of repentance and discipline that culminates on Maundy Thursday at the start of the Great Three Days. Marked in ash with the sign of the cross, we remember that we are both creatures of dust and a new creation in Christ.
Lent began as a time for persons to prepare to be baptized at the Vigil of Easter. We, too, in this season of Lent prepare ourselves to remember our Baptism at Easter as we ritually “pass over” with Jesus from death to new life. Hearing our Lord’s call to follow, we imitate him by fasting, giving freely, and engaging in acts of lovingkindness.
Make plans to be in worship on March 5, 2025, at either noon or at 7pm. Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services.
Wednesdays In Lent
Wednesdays, March 5, 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 9 at Noon and 7pm
My Soul is Dry—A Lenten Exploration
The Book of Psalms (or The Psalter) is the most quoted book in the New Testament, and is rooted deeply in Christian prayer, worship and song. Both intensely personal and wonderfully communal, the psalms invite believers into echoing (practicing) the voice of the Church’s Lord, Jesus Christ—a type of catechesis where members of the Church, in St. Paul’s words, “put on the mind of Christ.”
This Lent, Grace will explore seven particularly meaningful and important psalms, traditionally known as the Seven Penitentials. These seven psalms (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143) are examples of sorrow for sin, repentance and desire for amendment and restoration—in other words, they are particularly fit for dry seasons in life!
Each of these psalms will be a prominent part of our prayer services on Wednesdays during Lent, as we explore the nature of sin, the purpose and structure of repentance and reconciliation, and the power of God’s forgiveness. We will pray, sing and ponder these psalms week by week, confident that God will pour grace into the parched places of our lives, starting with Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
